The Kolden Report: Wild Horse Stampede! Wolf Point, MT July 2013

Hello, kids!

Nancy and Elizabeth, of River Valley Traders in the Fort Peck Hotel, have chosen to call it quits.  If you haven't stopped in to shop, best go  in the next few weeks or you'll never have the chance.    If you are interested in owning their store, you can contact them at rivervalleytraders@ymail.com.  Thanks to both of them for their efforts these past few years.   You will be missed!

Wolf Point hosts the "Grandaddy of rodeo", The Wild Horse Stampede, each July.  This year was no exception and here are highlights from the event.  Enjoy!

EGADS!  (Think these fellows are in good shape?  Yep....)

Inline image 12

Cooter?  Is that you?  (But seriously.....riding these broncs takes skill and strength, both of which this cowboy certainly has).

Inline image 20

Pickin' up.  Notice how easy he makes it look to grab a cowboy from the back of a bucking bronc while galloping down the arena? ( I love the flowy chap fringe and horse's mane.)

Clay Nagle dives off a perfectly good horse to grab a running steer.

Again, from the top.

Diving off....

The MISS!  (Poor fellow, looks like his shoulder took the brunt of the fall but I'm told he was not injured!  Lucky.)

Inline image 15

Cowboy "ejection".

Inline image 17

And he lands ON HIS FEET!

Inline image 16

I'd yell too if a bronc was going over backward in the chute with me!

Inline image 18

This bronc kept rearing in the chute...this poor cowboy nearly got munched a number of times...

Inline image 21

FINALLY.

Inline image 22

Four in the air.  (NOW he gets a chance to ride!)

How it's DONE.

Percheron Thunder!  This man is something else.  He rides two horses at once - STANDING- and none of them have any gear but a headstall.  Can you say "WELL TRAINED?"  This act was worth the price of admission many times over.

The Kolden Report: She's BAAAAACK! August 9, 2013

Hi, kids!

My system went kaput and after much ado, I have a new one.  Trouble is Windows 8.  I am not loving it nor do any of the VERY smart people I have contacted to help me figure out how to do what.  Anyone out there loving Windows 8?

I am now forced to use gmail and I don't quite have the functionality that I had in my old software.  The plus side is I DO have spell check.  You will see email from this address, at least for now although just creating this teensy report was fairly painful and I don't have the formatting options I enjoyed in the past.

Also, I have had to create my address book from scratch and it's highly likely that some of you receiving this email do not belong on the subscriber list.    If so, please "reply" and simply type "unsubscribe".  I'll take care of the rest.

I am nearly a month behind but that's okay.  Gonna have to be!

I have a few images for you today that I had ready before the computer woes began so we'll start with those.  Eventually I'll get the needed software together and get a flow going but until then, thanks for your patience!

The Kolden Report: 90th Wild Horse Stampede, July 12, 2013

Hello, kids!

It is Stampede weekend here in Wolf Point.  40 years ago, my 10 year old self was about to win "Best Junior Couple", alongside my trusted partner in crime and best friend Doug , in the Wolf Point Wild Horse Stampede Parade.

Back then, we were celebrating the "Golden" stampede, 50 years of rodeo.  It was a VERY big deal and how we talked our folks into letting us ride in the parade is beyond me.  But....we did.  We had on matching red shirts with white ruffles that my Gramma Thale sewed for us, new blue jeans, boots and white straw hats.   (Poor Doug was NOT pleased about the white ruffles on the shirts but after some pleading he relented.)   Doug rode his black Shetland, Jet who rubbed you into anything and everything he could get near and I rode Dixie, a black Appaloosa mix with a stubborn streak and a penchant for dog food and drinking from the garden hose.  I'm sure we were a sight, two hicks from the sticks and all.

In order to win "Best Junior Couple", you had to ride all three days in the parade and the final day of the rodeo, the winners galloped into the arena, trophies in hand, for all to see.  I can still remember the thrilling ride we made into the arena, in front of the crowd.  Funny part is, I worried more about my horse crow hopping or refusing to run, than the crowd who had gathered to watch the Grand Daddy of rodeo.

Pictures of Doug and I were taken and I had my framed photo and trophy for many years.   Today, I find myself wishing for that photo to share with you.  Instead, memories will have to do!

For those of you within striking distance, why not come to Wolf Point tomorrow to see the parade or take in the rodeo and make some memories of your own!  I don't want to spoil the show for you but I WILL say that "Percheron Thunder" is well worth the price of admission.

Speaking of photos, stop by Art in the Park tomorrow from 10-5pm.  I have some new pieces and a good selection of art cards for your shopping pleasure.  Sign up to win!

Here's a sneak peek of what you might see at the Wild Horse Stampede:

Happy Trails!
